Oscars Establish New AI Regulations and Expand International Film Nominations
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved on Saturday (May 2, 2026) a series of new amendments to the Oscar rules for its upcoming 99th edition in March. The decisions included placing strict restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence, requiring proof of human performance in participating works and that scripts be written by humans. Regarding international films, qualifying opportunities were expanded to include non-English language works crowned in major festivals like Cannes and Berlin, without being limited to official country submissions. Actors were also granted the opportunity to be nominated for more than one role in a single category, provided they achieve sufficient votes.
