Iraq’s Joint Operations Command said it is monitoring circulating claims alleging the presence of unauthorized bases or forces in desert of Karbala east of Al-Nukhaib and Najaf, stressing that the matter relates to a previously recorded incident.

The command explained that a security force from the Karbala and Najaf operations commands moved into the area and engaged unknown, unlicensed detachments supported by aircraft, resulting in the death of one fighter, injuries to two others, and damage to a vehicle.

It added that security units maintained pressure and presence on the ground, forcing those groups to withdraw under aerial cover, while regular inspection and search operations continue across all sectors—particularly desert routes up to the international borders.

According to verified field reports, Iraqi territory has remained free of any unauthorized bases or forces since that incident, the command said, warning that some parties are attempting to politicize the issue through misleading narratives.

The command also underlined that legal action will be taken against anyone spreading false information or malicious rumors that undermine Iraq’s sovereignty and the standing of its security institutions.
