Tehran Accuses Washington of Using Security Council as a Political Tool to Legitimize "Unlawful" Measures

Iran's mission to the United Nations has described the US efforts to garner international support for a resolution against Tehran as "ridiculous and deceptive" and purely politically motivated. In an official statement, the mission affirmed that American pressure and coercion would not succeed in legitimizing what it termed "unlawful measures," including a naval blockade, attacks on Iranian commercial vessels, and the detention of their crews in acts described as "piracy-like." The mission pointed out that many countries joined the resolution under political duress and direct US threats, considering that attempts to create legitimacy for predetermined political goals only undermine the Security Council's credibility. It is noteworthy that Washington had previously amended its draft resolution by removing direct references to Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which authorizes force, while retaining strict language threatening sanctions in case of non-compliance to ensure freedom of navigation in the region.
