Environmental Proposal to Combat the Spread of "Water Hyacinth" in Iraqi Rivers Using Biological Control
Agricultural and environmental experts have proposed scientific solutions to counter the continuous expansion of the invasive "water hyacinth" plant in Iraqi rivers and streams, which has become a threat to water resources and agricultural wealth. Agricultural expert Uday Al-Rubaie suggested adopting "biological control" methods using a specialized insect known as the "water hyacinth weevil," which has proven effective in limiting the plant's growth in certain parts of the country. He explained that this solution, successful in previous international trials, weakens the plant and reduces its reproductive capacity without relying on mechanical removal, which has not yielded decisive results. He called on relevant authorities to adopt this method within an integrated management strategy to protect aquatic ecosystems.
