Iraq and Iran Discuss De-escalation: Hussein Affirms Ending War is an Urgent Regional Interest
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi today, Friday (May 1, 2026), focused on field developments and efforts to extinguish the ongoing war. A Foreign Ministry statement conveyed that Hussein renewed Baghdad's position calling for the prioritization of reason and dialogue, stressing that "prolonging the conflict serves no party and inflicts the most severe damage on Iraq and its people." Hussein explained that Iraq is proceeding with intensive consultations with all international and regional actors to urge them to support peace efforts, warning that any further escalation threatens to drag the region into an abyss of comprehensive chaos.
