Golden Opportunity or Difficult Test?.. Broad Support for Al-Zaidi's Government Opens Door to "Conditional Success"
Abbas Al-Jubouri, head of the Al-Rafd Center for Strategic Studies, confirmed on Tuesday (May 5, 2026) that the new government headed by Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi possesses great opportunities to achieve success, relying on the broad support it enjoys at both domestic and external levels.
Al-Jubouri stated that the political understandings preceding the formation of the government represent a solid foundation for stability, and reduce the likelihood of the political deadlock that previous governments suffered from.
He explained that domestic support, whether from political forces or the street, gives the government important momentum in its early stages, but remains conditional on its ability to achieve tangible results in service and economic files within a reasonable timeframe.
He added that the government also enjoys regional and international acceptance, which may contribute to enhancing opportunities for economic cooperation and investment, and supporting Iraq's efforts to consolidate security stability and confront challenges.
He pointed out that the government's success depends largely on its management of sensitive files, foremost among them combating corruption, improving services, stimulating the economy, in addition to achieving balance in foreign relations that preserves Iraq's sovereignty.
Al-Jubouri affirmed that this stage represents one of the most prominent opportunities available to an Iraqi government in recent years, but converting this support into real achievements on the ground will remain the biggest challenge.
These assessments came amid a political atmosphere characterized by a degree of consensus among different forces, coinciding with Al-Zaidi's assignment to form the government, amid hopes of bringing about tangible change in government performance.
Observers believe that this stage represents a real test of the government's ability to invest political, popular, and international support, and convert it into practical steps that address chronic challenges in the country.
